JoAnna Garza completed her Master’s in Social Work at the University of Denver with an emphasis in Integrated Behavioral Health. During her concentration year JoAnna completed her clinical experience at St. Mary’s Family Medicine Center in Grand Junction, Colorado as a Behavioral Health Provider. This is where JoAnna was first introduced to the world of Primary Care Behavioral Health (PCBH). After graduation, JoAnna returned to the Rio Grande Valley, a rural town close to the US-Mexico border, in order to provide care in the community where she was raised. JoAnna has been a part of the PCBH team at The University of Rio Grande Valley since January 2020. JoAnna’s primary role is that of a Behavioral Health Consultant, where she gets to work alongside Family Medicine Physician’s in order to provide behavioral health services to patients at one of the programs Family Medicine Residency programs. JoAnna has also assisted with development, teaching and oversite of behavioral science rotations for Family Medicine Residents. In addition to her role at the School of Medicine she also assists with supervision of students enrolled in the Primary Care Behavioral Health Certificate program, who aims to expand PCBH experience to graduate level students in Clinical Mental Health, Psychology, Clinical Rehabilitation Counseling and Social Work.
