Clinicians need to use time-effective, compassionate strategies to support people who do not experience small shifts / big changes. As in all follow-up visits, clinicians need to explore changes to the specific problem and experience with the planned behavioral experiment. In FACT, we keep our door open – for patients on a slower course to their “best life” and to the many, many people that need a nudge or a new skill, and we attempt to provide that service on the same day it is requested. One strategy is to shorten visits for people who return multiple times; 15 minutes is often adequate for showing kindness and concern and addressing the most pressing problem at that moment. Another strategy is to offer group and class services. In the first half of this webinar, learners will observe the use of the Bulls Eye Plan in addressing the needs of a group of patients struggling with mental health concerns and medical problems.
In the second half the webinar, participants will reflect on their experience in the course and develop a plan to guide future learning. The FACT Core Competency Tool (FACT CCT) provides a list of 17 areas of skill and knowledge associated with competency in FACT practice. Participants will complete self-assessments on the FACT CCT using a scale ranging from 0 (not competent) to 10 (mastery). The goal for a beginning FACT clinician is to practice at a skill of 4 (adequate) to 6 (a lot of competence).
Learners will use a FACT Learning Plan worksheet to create a plan to direct learning after the course ends. This webinar will also offer a preview of course two, Mastery of Focused Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. This more advanced course will support learners in (1) progressing toward 8 (exceptional) to 10 (mastery level) ratings on the FACT CCT, (2) learning and evaluating delivery of the Life Path Class to an individually selected group of patients, and (3) teaching FACT to team members, medical healthcare providers, behavioral health providers, and unlicensed members of today’s healthcare team.
