Mariachi Engranaje Azul, formerly known as Mariachi Orgullo de San Antonio, is an award-winning mariachi group from Lanier High School, the birthplace of Mariachi Education. Isabel “Belle” San Miguel Ortiz—the Mother of Mariachi Education—began campaigning for Mexican folk music and dance to be introduced into the San Antonio Independent School District (SAISD)’s curriculum, as an elementary and high school teacher. Under Belle’s guidance, Lanier High School finally became one of the first schools in the country to offer mariachi classes to students in 1970. This innovation quickly spread across the state of Texas and eventually across the nation. Today, Director Nunez and Director Krezdorn have been serving at Lanier High School's mariachi program since 2018 and have brought awards and won competitions with their guidance and student leadership.
