JoAnna Garza, LCSW, is a Primary Care Behavioral Health Consultant (BHC) in Family Medicine, and serves as the lead clinical BHC for a current FM Residency Program at UTRGV School of Medicine. In addition seeing patients as a BHC in clinic, she currently serves in the lead educational role in training FM residents in continuity behavioral science related educational requirements. Apart from bi-monthly didactic sessions that are focused on behavioral health topics, she also co-leads a Narrative Medicine curriculum for FM Residents to help with self-reflective practices for physician wellbeing. She also facilitates the longitudinal clinical rotation for residents in FM clinic when they are functioning as a Behavioral Health Consultant during the PCBH rotation. She also co-facilitates a PCBH boot camp for mental health learners and is involved in routine supervision of a PCBH Fellow in family medicine. She has served in this role since 2020 and have progressively increased in her autonomy in serving as an educator, lead clinician, and a PCBH expert.
